Hello again,more questions!
How much should I expect to pay for:

**vet check, when i buy a horse to have a full check done

**horse hauling, i don't have my own trailer yet so i'll have to rent from someone at my barn.(i'm currently leasing)we have a car that can pull a trailer and my trainer will be going with me.

**riding instructor advice, my instructor said she charges by comission. ?
there are a few horses i want to look at. 2 are at the same barn 100miles away, another is 150 miles away andthe last is 20 miles away.
what is a fair price to pay?

**trial period, i want a 10 or 14 day trial period with which ever horse I decide to buy. If,for whatever reason, the horse needs to be returned will we be charged for having the horse?i was wondering if we would only be charged if its something we don't like about the horse and not charged if we discover and haven't been told abou like he trips, has navicular, cribs etc.it could get kind of messy though,if they claim the horse has never done (vice) before or started doing whatever due to bad riding

**my instructor said that she recommends x-rays for horses over $5000.if I'm paying just under that should i get it done anyway?

hope you can help

Hello again Annie

How much should I expect to pay for:
**vet check, when i buy a horse to have a full check done
again - like the other email anywhere from $400 - $1000 and more-- insist on flex testing and if this vet finds an issue - they rate the flex test trot off at 1-5 the higher the number the higher the horse "responded negatively" to the test and there may BE something only x-ray's will reveal.  Anything over +1 on flex - X_RAY!!!  X-Rays are around $25 per shot --- on legs --- and feet to reveal navicular (which CAN be a manageable disease - just more expensive to shoe more frequently) -- also have the vet pull a DRUG SCREEN to see if the horse is on any medications masking lameness or attitude problems.  You may mention to the owners that this test will include this and if they hedge -- hmmmmm

**horse hauling, i don't have my own trailer yet so i'll have to rent from someone at my barn.(i'm currently leasing)we have a car that can pull a trailer and my trainer will be going with me.

going rate is at least $1.00 per mile round trip for one horse .... subject to a minimum and can be more - depending on your area -- I don't know the NC market

**riding instructor advice, my instructor said she charges by comission. ?
HAHA -- addressed this in the other email.  it should NOT exceed 10% of the purchase price --- are you willing to pay this or have some other expert help you and pay a FINDERS FEE or negotiate with YOUR trainer to pay HER the FINDERS FEE...  Kind of like the real estate market --- when the agent selling your home is dedicated to the seller etc...  Make SURE her intentions are the best for you!

there are a few horses i want to look at. 2 are at the same barn 100miles away, another is 150 miles away andthe last is 20 miles away.

How would I know? I know NOTHING about these horses -- where they are located is irrelevant!!!  How old - what have they won?  etc etc etc...

---- you'll be lucky to find someone who will let you try this horse at your place --- I won't do it -- I don't know you -- don't know what you'd DO to my horse etc....  TOO MUCH LIABILITY INVOLVED as well.  GO RIDE THE HORSE SEVERAL TIMES -- and explain right up front you want to do this..

Have a contract drawn up where they state the horse is free from vices, cribbing, stall weaving, and sale is contingent on passing a vet check

**my instructor said that she recommends x-rays for horses over $5000.if I'm paying just under that should i get it done anyway?

I'll answer this question with another Can you LOSE under $5k if later the horse is lame ----?  and cannot be fixed ?  REGARDLESS of what they say on the sales contract the ONLY proof that will stand up in court is a vet check at purchase with that contract.  If you don't even if they said on paper the horse is fine --- you will lose as they will say you DID something to the horse after you assumed possession.   VET CHECK OR NOT --- this is your decision based on whether or not you can lose that money if something shows up later..

Hello Dee,
About the distance of the horses, I mentioned that because i was wondering whether it would have an effect on the price charged by my trainer.
For eg. if we looked at 2 horses 1 at present barn the other 5 miles away and bought 2nd horse for $4000 would we still be charged the same 10% comission as if we had looked at over 50 horses in various states for over a year and bought a horse for $4000?
$400-$1000 for vetting!!!would this be covered by us or the sellers?what would this include?
how should we write out a contract?
I'm 15, I've ridden for 8 years, I have shown in 2'9 jumper classes and the highest I've jumped is 3'9.I'm riding a green horse at the moment and would like a horse which is fairly well trained so that I can enjoy riding more.
As you said, just b/c you pay xxx for a horse doesn't make it worth xxx.
I doubt my parents would pay over $4000 or $5000.
Age; between 5 and 15.10 or 12 would be ideal I think. As far as money goes when is a horse at it's peak value?
A horse that has shown successfully in 2'3 2'6 hunter classes and maybe 2'9 3' jumpers would be preferable.
I see what you mean about the trial period.Should I be looking for horses closer to me then?150 miles is far if you're going a few times to try a horse.
To give you some idea of horses I'm looking at;
at equine.com ,under advanced search:
*Jamison(been for sale since summer 2005 if you look on the link given.is this a red flag)
*For Pete's Sake
*Maureen(there are 2 ads for the same horse, the price has been reduced on the one with the pic)
*All For Fitness

My trainer said she would keep her eyes open for horses for sale.Where is the best place to look for a horse?I have used equine.com, horsetopia
and the local tack shop.If I go through the tack shop and word of mouth though I'm a lot less likely to find a suitable horse than if I travel out-of-state.
Last thing(for now!!) how should I communicate with sellers over the internet. If you saw the above horses on equine.com what questions do you think I should aske about them?
On the advertisements where it says "motivated seller, price neg., must seel now" by how much is the price neg.?
Also(sad, but practical) should I buy with the consideration of selling in the future?I will prob(touch wood) be able to keep my horse with me for undergraduate school but after that I don't know. The young trakener/TB mare would probably be easiest to sell and find the best home.If I were to buy one of the older 15yr old horses they would be in 20s.I would have to find a friend to keep him/her in a field if I were at grad school or studying. One of the things I hate most about horses and riding is the way horses are bought and sold like they are not alive.
What are the advantages of having a registered horse? Is it worth paying for? What is the point?
Thank you again!!And thanks for very quick reply.
Annie

THAT'S A QUESTION TO DOUBLE CHECK WITH YOUR TRAINER --- SHE SHOULD ONLY CHARGE ONE COMMISSION..50 HORSES HOWEVER IS A LOT OF HER TIME -- CLEAR THE CHARGES CLEARLY WITH HER.

$400-$1000 for vetting!!!would this be covered by us or the sellers?what would this include?

THIS WOULD BE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR-- DEPENDS ON WHAT THE VET THINKS --- YOU NEED TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME (PAY THE VET AN APPOINTMENT FEE FOR IT IF NECESSARY SINCE YOU DON'T HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH A VET AT CURRENT) AND ASK THESE QUESTIONS - ITS CALLED A PREPURCHASE EXAM ---
FEEL FREE TO ASK ME ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT HE SAYS IF YOU NEED TO -- BUT ASK - AND UNDERSTAND FROM HIM BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY GET TO "THE DAY FOR THE CHECK"

how should we write out a contract?
YOUR BEST BET IS TO WRITE DOWN WHAT ALL IS AGREED AND STATED TO BY YOU AND THE SELLER -- AND HAVE ALL PARTIES SIGN IT --- AS A PREPURCHASE CONTRACT... - CONSULT HORSE ATTORNEY IS THE BEST WAY

VARIES PER HORSE - SORRY CANT BE MORE DEFINITIVE..
DEPENDS ON THE SOUNDNESS OF THE HORSE AND HOW MUCH ITS WINNING!!! <GRIN> -- HAVE SEEN FOLKS TURN DOWN $150K FOR A REINING HORSE PRE-FUTURITY - THEN THE HORSE DOESN'T DO AS WELL AS "ASSUMED IT WOULD" AND THEN STRUGGLE TO MAKE IT BACK TO A FIGURE CLOSE TO THAT... ITS A GAMBLE...

A horse that has shown successfully in 2'3 2'6 hunter classes and maybe 2'9 3' jumpers would be preferable.
I see what you mean about the trial period.Should I be looking for horses closer to me then?150 miles is far if you're going a few times to try a horse.
THIS IS A DECISION YOU MUST MAKE ON YOUR OWN -- I REFUSE TO BE LIMITED BY DISTANCE - AND I LIVE IN TEXAS LOL...

To give you some idea of horses I'm looking at;
at equine.com ,under advanced search:
*Jamison(been for sale since summer 2005 if you look on the link given.is this a red flag)
NOT NECESSARILY --- MAYBE JUST NOT NEGOTIABLE ON PRICE?

*For Pete's Sake

HORSES WE'RE INTERESTED IN FOR JACKS CLIENTS - JACK CALLS THE TRAINERS AND DISCUSSES THE HORSE -- HE ALMOST FLEW TO THE EAST COAST TO CHECK ONE OUT TILL HE SPOKE TO THE TRAINER.  WE'VE NEVER BOUGHT A HORSE OFF THE NET.
LOOK FOR HORSES AT A SCHOOLING SHOW OR A SHOW...YOUR BEST BET TO SEE THE HORSE IN ACTION.

Last thing(for now!!) how should I communicate with sellers over the internet. If you saw the above horses on equine.com what questions do you think I should aske about them?
ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING - AND THEN KEEP WRITTEN COPIES OF YOUR CONTACTS - BEWARE - THERE ARE A LOT OF UNSCRUPULOUS FOLKS SELLING OVER THE NET...

On the advertisements where it says "motivated seller, price neg., must seel now" by how much is the price neg.?

THEY'RE WAITING FOR AN OFFER --- YOU CAN ONLY TEST THE WATERS BY MAKING AN OFFER --- YOU NEVER KNOW --- IT CAN BE LIKE A GARAGE SALE AND HOW MUCH MONEY THEY'RE NEEDING AT THAT TIME YOU MAKE THE OFFER....

Also(sad, but practical) should I buy with the consideration of selling in the future?
ALWAYS -- MONEY IS MADE BUYING A HORSE NOT SELLING IT --- IN OTHER WORDS --- MAKE A GOOD INFORMED PURCHASE AT A BARGAIN PRICE SO IF YOU DO HAVE TO SELL AND SELL QUICKLY - ITS EASIER DONE.  YOUR PARENTS WOULD LIKE THAT ONE <GRIN>

I will prob(touch wood) be able to keep my horse with me for undergraduate school but after that I don't know.

? CONFUSED ABOUT THIS STATEMENT

What are the advantages of having a registered horse? Is it worth paying for? What is the point?

DEPENDS ON THE VENUE YOU ARE SHOWING AND SELLING IN --- OURS ARE ALL REGISTERED...DEE

Thanks,
Did you see the horses on equine.com?What did you think?
Abouth confused statement, I was meaning it may be better to buy a younger horse b/c when I sell it will be easier to sell a 12 year old than a horse in its 20s!!!
So you recommend that I attend shows in the area?
Wouldn't it be that most the horses being shown would not be for sale?
What sort of questions should I ask sellers?
I've been saying the usual:has he shown?, how high jumped?,vices?, etc
any important questions that need to be asked?
You have found all your horses by going to shows?
Thanks!!!!

Answer
Did you see the horses on equine.com?  - no

What did you think? n/a

Abouth confused statement, I was meaning it may be better to buy a younger horse b/c when I sell it will be easier to sell a 12 year old than a horse in its 20s!
there are pluses and negatives to each option.

So you recommend that I attend shows in the area?
yes'

Wouldn't it be that most the horses being shown would not be for sale?
depends -- but doesn't hurt to ask if a horse is for sale...if it is -- and you get pricing - even if you can't afford the horses priced - you will get a better idea of what YOUR market truly is..

What sort of questions should I ask sellers?
anything and everything you can think of - but at a show you can see the horses' reactions to everything -

I've been saying the usual:has he shown?, how high jumped?,vices?, etc any important questions that need to be asked?
advise seller - you will vet check and drug test..

You have found all your horses by going to shows?
we raised and trained 90% of ours - others were from folks coming to us with a horse they wanted to sell and we purchased at the right price to make money on this horse -- we've never bought at high market price...- you make money when you buy a horse not sell it...<smile>
