Throat latch

Question

Gaiting
My 12 year old MFT, after only walking for a short distance, starts making this noise that's hard to describe. It's like a wheezing, but squeaky. Today, when I heard it, he was just grazing. My ranch owner, tho' he has never heard it, said it was his throat latch & I could have a vet scope it & surgery was a possibility to correct it. What do I need to know? Is this painful to him? Is this dangerous & something that requires attention or just annoying to me? What is my first step? What kind of expense am I looking at? Thank You!

Answer
Carol:

I cant diagnose this over the internet, but it does sound like there could be a partial respiratory obstruction. Scoping is definately one thing that would be necessary to diagnose the condition but whether surgery would fix it is dependent on what it is- there are a number of possible conditions this could be and it could be coming from the throat area but would be associated with upper airway structures such as the epiglottis, arytenoid cartilages or trachea itself. It could also be an obstruction of the nasal passages and xrays may also be necessary to diagnose the problem. Get an equine vet involved with an endoscope and an xrayt machine. None of these things is dangerous or very uncomfortable to use on a horse. i cant tell you if this is dangerous or painful but it probably is restricting his breathing from your description. Get a vet. good luck with this. Let me know if you have any other questions.
