frog trouble

Question
Not my horse.  Owner refuses to take him to a vet.  Horse was in the mud and half of the frog on his front hoof has become detached from the heel to the toe. The horse has been moved to a grassy pen.  I have seen the hoof.  It is clean and dry under the frog.  She is squirting Tylan 200 under the frog every day and wrapping the hoof with vet wrap all the way up to the knee as the leg is swollen too.  She is going to remove the detached section of the frog.  It has been 4 days. Will he heal this way?

Answer
If there is not any deep undermining of the frog to the sensitive portion or blood has been drawn, I do think it will heal. It must be kept clean and dry and out of the damp footing. If there is an infection, which i cant tell from this information, the horse may need systemic antibiotics. He should not be lame if there is no infection and the deep sensitive layer of the frog is not exposed. If he becomes lame or if the area starts to look damp or to drain, the horse needs to be looked at by a vet immediately. As you hacve suggested, the best thing for the horse regardless is to have a vet look at it now. I wish you guys lick with this. Feel free to contact me again if I can help any further.
