Foal movement

Question
We have a 12 year old mare who is now 346 days pregnant. She lost her foal last year at approx. 350 days, it was stillborn. Vet couldn't find any reason for the death. I have been nervous about her foaling again and have watched her carefully. I am wondering how much I should be seeing the foal moving? If the foal had died already, would she abort?
Thank you so much.

Answer
Dear Alexandra,
Sometimes mares do loose there foals, the foal should move quite alot at this stage in pregnancy. Sometimes you can induce labor, your vet will have to decide if he wants to or not. Aborting depends upon the mare, sometimes they will hold the foal even if it has died. It's all up to if you think she should be induced, We have never induced labor but sometimes it is neccesary. If a mare has a stillborn once or a misscarriage, the more likely it is she will have another. Just watch her carefully.
