lounging my filly

Question
I have knowledge with horses since I was 4 years old but have been away from them for a while. I have halter trained and worked with my aunt to green brake a horse but that was long ago...anyways my question is kind of simple?!?!? I have started lounging my filly and she is doing well, but she is a big pet and wants to always keep coming back close to me almost to the point of being "rude" not knowing her boundries. I can't seem to keep her going but one circle around and she wants to come in close and I keep pushing her out from me and keep her walking. She is eager to learn and a sweet disposition. Once she goes around the circle she does stop and face me to see what she should do next. But how do you keep them away from you? Thanks---Heather

Answer
Dear Heather..

"Pet" horses are hard... bad habits ---how old is your filly? -- the older she is the longer it will take to "undo" the wrong training.  Use your longe whip to convince her to stay away from you in the round pen.. cluck then immediately tap with the longe whip on her heels -- stay at her hip to keep her moving forwards..  you have to educate her to stay out of your bubble.... --- sometimes easier to keep her moving in a smaller "circle" then feed out the longe line as she understands... she should understand the cluck means to move in the circle either direction and when you give the Whoa command she stops and stands until you come to her -- not the opposite..

good luck
Dee
