Question
Hi,
I am really needing some help with this. I have had horses for most of my life and am pretty knowledagable with them. But this has caught me TOTALLY unprepaired. I had my 4yr. old connamara vaccinated and a week later he contracted founder. The Vet said to give him bute. We did for 4 days and thought he looked better So not knowing , we let him out as usuual, He looked bad again so we started him on bute again. But we cannot find any info on how long to keep him on it . We have confined him changed his whole diet to low starch feed and hay. He is now on 1grm 2x day. We are trying to get him down to 1grm 1x day for 4 days then try to switch him to aspirn 2500 mg 2x day. But really we are lost with this and can not find anyone who can give us a difinative answer. Please let us know if you have any information that may help. Sorry for the long question. I am also an expert but for birds.oh and we havent had a radiograph. Where we live its not a regular thing that vets do.
Thanks very much,

Answer
Hi Diana.
I don't like using Bute on horses at all. I think the cons far outway the benefits. The best product on the market IMHO is Antiflam. You feed 2 oz a day for a week to ten days, then feed one oz a day.
There are many supplements on the market that are exclusively for horses that have foundered or have hoof problems. I'd suggest checking out www.smartpaks.com.
  Best of luck!

Hi Diana.
Here's the US web site for MacLeod Pharmaceuticals. They are the company behind Antiflam. It's a little pricey but I've found it to be well worth the money. http://www.macleod-equine.com/usa/products.html
Best of luck with your pony.
