Weight gaining supplement

Question
I have a 10 yo QH geld. that I bought about 2 months ago.  He was a little underweight and way out of shape when I bought him.  He's now getting some muscle on him and is being ridden about 4 times a week.  He's eating 1.5 scoops of sweetfeed with beet pulp twice a day plus hay all day long. We also add corn oil to his feed.  I feed him tons of alfalfa cubes for treats, but he still isn't gaining weight.  Can you recommend a good weight gaining supplement?  There are so many out there, I don't know which one to try.  Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi!

Thanks for your question and I hope I can be of some help.

First of all, checking with your vet is always a smart thing to do.

Second, some ideas that I have come across are of course beet pulp and alfalfa, all of which you tried. Another natural way is grass. If at all possible he should have acess to grass all day. Another idea, instead of beet pulp which has been said to only fill their stomach and not put on weight, is rice bran. It can usually found at a local feed store or horse store. Just ask and someone should be able to help you pick one out. Max-E-Glo (by RiceX) is a very popular choice and has been highly reccomended.

Before you start on a supplement I would check that there is nothing wrong with him that is preventing him from gaining weight. Sometimes it's a medical condition.

Another supplement that come reccomended to me are "Hard-Keeper" (made by Vita-Flex) - high in all of the fats, amino acids, and the omega-3.

I would just suggest going to your local store for whereever you get your other feed and supplements and ask them what they would reccomend. They are often very knowledgeable about what products are available in your area.

I hope that helps!
