Question
Hi, i have a 2 year old and she was recently put out in a large pasture with older horses, a few days after I found a cut on her butt and a gash on her ankle. The one on her ankle is 2 inches long and an inch wide, its about 1/4 inch deep. My instructor told me it wasnt that wide that morning when she first saw it. So they globbed furison on it and put her back out. I saw it later that night, it doesnt seem to bother her, and she's not limping, but it is a little swollen so i ran water over it for 5 minutes or so. I had my instructor put a wrap on her leg after we disinfected it. She called it a sweat wrap. And she mentioned that we need to watch out for proud flesh development. Is there something more that i need to do? And what should i be looking for healing wise? She's my first horse and i have no clue about wounds like these but i dont want to do something wrong when caring for it. Also she came off tucaprim for a little forearm wound about a month or two back that got infected. If this wound gets infected would it be ok to out her back on it? Or should i let it drain?

Answer
hi kassidy,
don't worry the cut does not sound bad.keep it wrapped for a while and put her on an anti-biotic such has peneciline that way she doesn't get and infection. keep putting the furison on it, its pone of the best disinfector. since shes not limping on it then that means no tendons or joins were damaged. just run cold water over it for 20minutes two times a day and that will help the swelling go down a bit. once the swelling is down and the wound is not bleeding or oozing that much, take the wrap off and let it air out. put a wound ointment such as Corona on it and make sure the flies don't get on it. your doing a great job caring for your horse and keep up the good works. when the wound starts to heal it obviously will stop bleeding and oozing. when you take the wrap off and let if air out a type of scab will form, let it scab up so the skin can reheal. to  completely reheal it may take up to a month. if its still oozing really bad then take the scab off and clean it then rewrap it. only take the wrap off when its is no longer to oozy. if you have anyother problems or questions dont be shy to ask. im here to help. let me know how shes doing in a week or so.
