bleeding of the hoof

Question
I have a six year old thoroughbred that is retired from racing. We have her feet taken care of approximately every six weeks by the ferrier.
Yesterday, after doing her feet, her front hoof began to bleed quite a bit. She had no problems before hand. We clean her feet daily, and have never noticed any problems.
The ferrier tried to lance the bleeding, but with no luck.
I cleaned her foot with hydrogen peroxide and put a hoof pad on her foot and wrap it, to keep it clean.
Did I do the right thing? What would cause the hoof to bleed after trimming? She will not put any weight on it. I have called the vet, but he will not be in town for a couple more days. Please help.

Answer
I would say the farrier cut too deep and caused the bleeding.  You want to keep it clean.  I would not put any more peroxide on it and just keep it clean.  You can make a good bandage with duct tape.  I use a diaper, tape the plastic side with duct tape and then wrap the foot.  If you ever cut your nail too short it is painful, so the horse will limp, but keeping dirt out and running cold water from hose over it will help pain.
