Question
Is there a way of test if a mare is in foal should be about 6 months, I belive the ultra sound can only be done  early in pregnancy Janice

Answer
Janice:

You need a vet. A vet needs to be involved with a pragnancy throughout the entire process. That means vaccinations for the mare to [protect the foal and checks for the health of the pregnancy. You are right, ultrasound is done for pregnancy check early on by an ultrasound exam of the uterus through the rectum. However, even in late preganancy, an ultrasound can be done on the abdomen to see the foal too. That said, its VERY easy at 6 months for a vet to do a rectal exam and easily feel the foal. The trans-abdominla ultrasound allows other things to be evaluated to ensure the pregnancy, heart rates can be recorded, movement, fetal fluids can be evaluated but the ultrasound exam acroos the abdomen requires a certain type of ultrasound machine and will run about $150 to $250. A rectal exam can be performend for about $20 or $25, its cheaper but doesnt give nearly as much information about the pregnancy. Get a vet involved with this pregnancy to help ensure the safety and health of both the mare and the foal. good luck to you. Feel free to contact me again if you have any other questions.
