Question
Hello, i  am a 15 year old girl that has been rideing for the past 5 years. I am looking to buy a thoughbred mare who was once on the track.she is now 12 years old. The owners arent even sure if she is broke but say she has a wonderfull trot and she is a sweet heart my coach also has meet the mare and says she produced many great foals for jumping. And says i should give the mare a try. The thing i am unsure about is how do i reback a throughbred that was once on the track? Do i start out with ground work and get her used to voice commands in the round pen? or do i start by rideing her in the round pen?I trained my morgan jumper when he was 12 years old, so i dont think i have a probley with trainging a older horse. But a ex-race horse is oviously very differant from a morgan horse even if that morgan horse only had a week of trainging on him.I am just looking for trainging advice and any you could give me would be greatly appreciated.Thank you very much,
Melanie

Answer
Dear Melanie:
Start from the ground up,just like she has never been broke. You will know pretty quick what she will be like.

If she was on the track, she has been broke and only needs a refresher course. Just take your time and she will come around pretty quick.

Stay in the round penn until you are sure she has a good mouth and will not try to run off

                             good luck
