Question
Hi, i have a red footed tortoise he is in a 75 gallon long tank and the humidity is usually around 40% and i have a habbamist and mist the tank very often but the humidity is still low and i was curious is it because i don't put the screen top on the cage i leave it off because there is no way they can escape so i was wondering if maybe the screen held the humidity in or not. so if  i put the screen top on will it rise the humidity.

thanks

Answer
Well...

We don't generally recommend aquariums for tortoises- it is too easy to trap bad air in there- if you put a more solid cover over it, it will create smelly air full of molds and such.

The easiest way to create high humidity is to make a humid hide. Simply take a plastic box with a lid, like a shoe box, and cut a hole in the side big enough for the tortoise to easily walk through. Put about an inch of dampened but not wet absorbent material in the box, park it in a warm area or shine a warm light on the box, and it should be fine.
