Sugar Gliders and cats

Question
Hey, I've wanted a Sugar Glider for a very long time (I've done tones of studying about them) But one thing... I have a cat. Would the Glider(s) be safe around my cat? I've seen things that they'll be fine, but I will feel a lot safer knowing for sure. If you'd let my know that would be great.
Thanks.

Answer
Dear Lanae:

Good for you for researching before you get one of these high-maintenance pets.  It's really up to you.  Most cats will attack, play with, kill and eat small animals like sugar gliders.  They cannot be trusted with gliders and even if the gliders are in a cage, when the glider hangs onto the side of the cage with its stomach against the bars, a cat could do serious damage.

Now, I have two cats.  However, I have a separate glider room that the cats are not allowed in.  If an accident happens and a glider gets out, there is no where for it to go to get into trouble except for the room I have prepared for them.

Before I set up my glider room, I had my gliders in my bedroom and there were a few close calls.  A cage door would accidentally pop open or be left open and the gliders would get out.  I found them twice by noticing the way my cat was acting.  I was lucky.  My cat just watched them, but other stories don't end as well.

It is up to you and the precautions you take to ensure separation between your cat and the sugar gliders.

Best of luck.
