Question
QUESTION: Hello, I am new to sugar glider parenting, so I have been reading everything I can find about them. I know they love honey, and that it is good for them. I am not sure about molasses however. She loves it but is it good for her?
Thanks

ANSWER: Hello Tarri,

Thanks for your question.  Molasses is fine, but any natural sugars should be given in moderation, as part of a balanced diet.

QUESTION: Hi Betty
Thank you for your quick response. The way I am using it as a binder in the leadbetter diet, it calls for honey but I was caught off guard and did not realize that I was out. I had molasses so I used that, but I noticed as soon as I opened it she went nuts. She really loves it. I also feed her fresh fruits and veggies, just as I do for my birds. Not to mention a protein source, chicken, boiled eggs ect. Do you think this diet sounds ok? Am I feeding her right or am I setting us up for future problems?
Thanks
Tarri

Answer
Hello Tarri,

Your diet sounds wonderful.  Are you providing calcium supplements?  Gliders need sufficient calcium to avoid hind-end paralysis.

As for the molasses, I have not seen any long-term studies.  The BML with honey has a history of success with many glider breeders.  I don't think I would make the substitution permanently.  Molasses is made from sugar cane, which may not be as healthy as honey. In other words, honey is known to be okay, molasses is an unknown.  If it were me, I'd save molasses for a treat, or for times when you don't have honey.  Sound reasonable?
