Question
QUESTION: Last night my female glider made a very weird noise...It is something like crabbing + fighting + hissing. What is that sound mean? She make that noise around 3am...she was just standing in the cage and make it loudly. When i accompany her beside the cage, she stopped making the noise but starting to make another noise which is something like crabbing + fighting and then ending with barking. I do not know how to describe the noise but it is really weird. Do u have any idea about why she make the sound?

ANSWER: Hello,

She was just standing there?  Were there any gliders nearby?  The sound you described sounds like the noise mothers make when they want the joeys to stop nursing and leave them alone.  If your glider lives alone, it could mean, "I'm lonely and unhappy and want someone to hang out with."  Honestly, I can't really give you an answer.  Just be aware of her surroundings and situation when she makes the noise, and see if you can make out a pattern.

Good luck.  Keep me informed.

QUESTION: I am keeping her with a male in a same cage. Will she make that sound when she want or do not want to mate with the male?
I saw them mating just now. Is it possible my female glider had 'eaten' her joey(s)? I saw her giving birth to the joey on last Wednesday.
Thank.

ANSWER: Hello,

If the female is making "I don't want to mate" noises, you will see the male trying to chase her.

You are truly privileged to have seen a joey born.  I have only seen it once in seven years.  You won't really know what happened until you see or don't see joeys growing in the pouch.  Sugar Gliders can actually have three sets of joeys:  one in the womb, one in the pouch, and one nursing from outside the pouch.  The mother has different milk for the different age babies.  Fascinating!  Will the female be a first time mother?

Good luck, and please keep in touch.

My female glider will make this kind of sound in the middle of the night.

Answer
Hi,

This is the sound I hear my females make when they want the joeys to stop nursing.  It is also heard at mating time.  I would guess it is an annoyance sound.  By the way, do NOT mess with gliders when they are mating.

I hope this helps.
