biting glider

Question
I have had my glider for almost a year. He has always been very comfortable with me. Lately he has picked up a new very unacceptable habit of biting! This biting is strange though because he reaches for me so he can bite me. I used to be able to put my hands in his cage and play with him, but now whenever I get near him he reaches his little hand out grabs my finger and pulls it to his mouth and bites me ... hard! He has also started doing this when I put my hands through the cage bars. He actually tries to stretch his hand out to grab me and pull me in to bite. He used to allow me to pet him through the bars as well as climb on my arms and let me hold him in the cage. Now all he wants to do is bite and I dont know why. Its not out of fear because hes reaching out and grabbing me for the sole purpose of biting. Whats going on??

Answer
Hi Jesyka,

The problem you are having with your glider could be several things.  The most likely is that you have a smell on you that was not there before.  Perhaps you smell like something yummy to eat.  Do you have a new hand lotion?  Do you have food on your hands?  I had a student who was bitten every time she tried to handle the gliders.  They didn't bite any of the other students.  Turns out she made herself peanut butter sandwiches every morning, and still had the smell on her hands.

Try washing your hands with scentless soap before handling your glider. If this doesn't help, let me know.  Good luck.  I hope this helps.
