Question
QUESTION: I have had my sugar glider since December 23,2007 and he has recently started losing hair on his hair and it has brownish spots on his skin.He has also lost hair on his tail but no spots on it.Is there anything I can do for him?

ANSWER: Abbie,

I need more information to answer your question.  How old is your glider?  What you see on his head could be his bald spot.  Are the brownish spots on his chest?  This could be his scent gland.  The lost hair on his tail could be from an injury.  I am not a vet, so cannot give you medical advice.

Please write back with additional information.  Where exactly is the hair loss?  Where are the brown spots?  How old is your glider?  Do you have other gliders?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Betty

QUESTION: The glider is 1 year and a few months old.  And what I see on his head is his bald spot I think but it has brown specks on it.  There is a brown spot on his chest also but that is the only 2 places he has any sort of spots.  I only have one glider.

Thanks,

Abbie

Answer
Abbie,

From what I can tell from your description, you have nothing to worry about.  Male gliders have scent glands on both the top of their heads and on their chests.  The one on the chest will look weird, bald in the middle, with a brownish-reddish outline on the fur.

You could send me a photo if you want me to confirm this.
