Damaged ears, broken claw, broken toe

Question
We just came home today and were in shock when we noticed that our sugar glider, Wallie, had damaged ears, a broken toe, and missing claws. It looks like he might have got hurt sometime when our two gliders were playing. For his ears one is intact and dry and crinkled like a dried leaf, the other looks the same but some of it is missing. We are very concerned. We are suspecting he got in a fight but it is weird because he is the dominant glider. Is there anything we can/should do?

Answer
Rachael,

Not a happy situation for your baby!  The toes and claws could have gotten wrapped around threads or snags of cloth in the cage.  This happens frequently, especially if the toenails are not trimmed regularly.  The other glider may have tried to get him loose and inadvertently damaged his ears.  Gliders have been known to chew off toes and/or claws in order to free themselves from being trapped in threads, yarn, etc.  None of my gliders have ever had their ears damaged.  Usually, aggression by another glider results in damage to the back of the neck or eyes.

How is Wally acting?  Does he have open wounds?  He really should be seen by a vet to guard against infection.  How are the two gliders getting along?

Good luck.  Please keep me informed.
