Question
hello there-i have a pair of gliders that inbred...brother to sister. what, if any, problems can this cause? i have a two teired cage, and when i clean one level, i usually put them both in the same level....it was a hit and run i guess! i was worried because this will be kayuki's first littler, and when i get a quick glimpse in her pouch, i see joeys that i feel should have SOME kind of hair (they are still bald) we have know she was pregnant for over a month already...should the babies have hair yet? i know you will get hairless babies from inbreeding certain relative ginue pigs. thanls so much for your time, have a great day! kymberly

Answer
Kymberly,

Guinea Pigs are unusual in that they are born "ready to go."  Sugar Gliders, like mice, are born bald.  Their hair comes in slowly.

As for your problem with inbreeding, you'll just have to wait to see what happens.  It's possible that the joeys will be fine.  Inbreeding often leads to deformities and genetic issues, however, so anything's possible.  Since your glider is already pregnant, there is nothing you can do at this point.  Glider parents have a way of dealing with abnormal babies.  Relax and let nature take its course.  Hopefully everything will be fine.  Please keep in touch.

By the way, do NOT try to open up the pouch.
