Question
QUESTION: Hi there, one of my friends is selling her sugar gliders, and is giving me a
week "trial" of what its like to take care of them. Im really liking these little
guys and i think theyre really cool but im concerned with leaving for college
in august and everything. I could take them with me, but my college is 600
miles away, so i would have to schlep them back and forth every time. If i
leave them at home, i dont want them to become depressed after bonding
with me. I really like them but I just cant decide if I can do it or not. I want to
be able to but I just dont know what to do.

ANSWER: Aaron,

Gliders travel very well during the day, but are really antsy once it is time for them to be awake.  Will you be driving at night?  Do have somewhere for them to stay at both places?  They need lots of room to play at night.  Will you stay at a motel, or drive the whole way at once?  Motels can be a bit of a problem.

You're right, if you leave them alone for an extended amount of time, they will not be happy.  Would you have someone to watch them at school when you go home to visit?  All of these are questions I can't really answer for you.

Let me know if you have specific questions I can answer.  I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Thanks for answering so promptly
I need to figure out if theyre allowed on airplane with me (I dont trust putting
them in cargo). I guess what Im thinking is wait a semester because from
what it seems, it looks like I will have to be home EVERY night to give them
their food and such. Which means no going out and crashing at a friends
unless someone gets to them. If brought to the school, how much time every
day and when is needed for them?

Answer
As long as you have two gliders, they can entertain each other when you are gone.  If you know you will be gone, you can give them a staple food like Zookeeper's Secret.  I wouldn't leave them alone for more than a weekend without having a friend come in to check on them.    As for the airplane, they are NOT allowed.  The airlines only accepts cats, dogs, and (I think) birds.  I have contemplated sneaking them onto a plane, but what would happen if someone found out you had them?

So it seems to me that the only way you could have them would be to keep them at college and have a friend babysit when you go home for the holidays.
