Question
Hi Tracie, I just got my beardie and he is doing amazing. I have a quick question about the UVB. I have this bulb:http://www.zilla-rules.com/products/low-profile-fixtures.htm

I have the desert 50 model,Well I had that one for a year, but read there was a recall on them do to the the plastic that went over the bulb didn't allow any UVB out at all. So today I went and bought the whole new set again,This was the set that I was told by the company that had been fixed with the problem. Anyways just for precaution reason I did take the plastic window that was in front of the bulb just in case. lol I dont think it will do any harm from taking the piece of plastic off?

Anyways is this a good UVB bulb for my beardie? I heard the reptisuns are the best but my pet store didnt have any,So for right now is this a good bulb for him?

Also when he is basking he will sometimes close one eye for a second or two while hes looking at me or looking at what im doing then he will reopen both of them. I read they do this because by closing one eye they can focus better. Is this true?

Thanks for all your help

Answer
Hello Taylor,

The light that you are using is not very good, no.  Actually, though the plastic does not allow for any UVB to get through which was a good thing for this light.  The UVB was low wavelength & is dangerous for your reptile.  It also does not emit the proper wavelength for D3 synthesis either.
How close do you have the bulb to him?
Since he has been closing one eye off & on that could be normal behavior.  It could also be that the light is already bothering his eyes.  What type of basking light are you using?
I would recommend getting the Reptisun 10 tube bulb though when you can.  The light spectrum is much safer & it is a better overall spectrum with respect to the wavelength of the UVB.

How is his appetite doing?
