Answer
You don't appear to have asked a question, but I will make a comment, anyhow.

Reptiles aren't pets that should be purchased without in-depth research beforehand.  Unlike mammals, they cannot simply be put into a cage and given food and water...they require exact temperatures, special lighting, and correct nutrition for their species.  They will sicken and die without these things.

From your description, what you most likely have is a black and white tegu--but whether it is a Columbian or Argentian black and white tegu, I couldn't tell you from a description.

Here is a fairly good care sheet:  http://www.tegutalk.com/showthread.php?tid=7712#axzz24Xfi54cg
Here is another: http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/lizard-care-sheets/20072-argentine-black-w

It is not an inexpensive pet to keep, largely due to its caging and equipment requirements, but also due to its requirements for a varied fresh diet.  (Similar to the free puppy--the cost of the lizard is often nowhere near the cost of keeping the lizard).

If proper equipment and caging is beyond your means, then you should immediately return the animal to its original owner (if he was taking proper care of it), or surrender it to a reptile rescue facility or someone in your local herpetological society.  It will be at risk of developing infections and other problems if kept at improper temperatures for more than a day, and those will require veterinary attention to treat.

Never take advice from pet store personnel, and if your friend's care of the animal was nothing like what is stated in these care sheets, do not take advice from him, either.  This animal's welfare and life is in your hands now.
