anole lighting

i have 2 questions to ask . i have a green anole and I'm just wondering if a single anole really needs a UV lamp?  hes almost always green so it seems he happy. and the other one is how exactly can i tell if hes male or female?

Yes, of course.  Anoles need UVB light to make vitamin D.  They can't absorb enough of it, even when supplemented, from food.  Vitamin D is needed for calcium metabolism.  If deprived of it, they will develop metabolic bone disease.

Male anoles are slightly larger, have a longer snout and bigger head, and have slight bulges in their tail right at the base.  They can raise a ridge of flesh along their back, called a nuchal crest.  The females tend to have an irregular pale line down their back, instead.
