Question -
Hi - thankyou for taking my question. I live on Eastern Long Island where we have hot summers and moderately harsh winters. I live in a basement apartment and have turned my well window ( 3 ft wide X 7 ft long X 5 foot deep) into an outdoor terrarium. I have rocks, moss, planters with grass and a small artificial pond. There is netting over the top to protect my two GREEN FROGS from owls, raccoon, etc. The pond is Too shallow for them to hibernate in. My question is this: If I get a Large storage bin and put leaves and soil on the bottom - then fill it with pond water - will that be a healthy place for them to hibernate? Should I leave it outside once they have hibernated or put it in my garage? Any advice you could give me would help. Thank you very much. I am very excited about the frogs and look forward to hearing from you.

Answer -
Dear Pete,
thank you for  your question.
I think that it will be safer to put the storage bin into your garage once the frogs are inside because it might freeze completely when left in the well window. It's possible that they choose to hibernate hidden in the soil or moss and not in the water, in that case it's probably best to put them in some sort of container with moss, leaves ect. and keep them in the garage, too. That way they will be cold enough to hibernate through the winter but not too cold.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer

Answer
Just offer them the storage bin and a way to get in, they will decide for themselves once it's getting cold when it's time to hibernate and where they want to do this. If the earth in the well window is shallow, offer then a box with moss, earth and leaf litter so that they can bury themselves if they want to.
The storage bin should be 1/3 filled with mud, I wouldn't add leaves or something. The frogs will bury themselves in the mud.
I hope I was of some help
