Fungus on Crested Gecko Toes?

Question
We have about an 18 month old crested gecko.  We just noticed that it appears to be having some minor difficulty in climbing the sides of its enclosure.  In looking at the bottom on its feet we noticed that 3 toes on one front foot and 1 toe on a hind foot appear whitish-gray, different from the other toes.  It looks kind of like frostbite from the bottom, but obviously it is not frostbite.  Can they get a fungus or mold or something growing in the small spaces of the hairs on their toes or something?  Should we take him to a vet?  Thank you for any advice.

Answer
Hi William, The white areas you are noticing on the toes are most likely unshed skin. Shedding problems are usually caused by low humidity so they become an extremely common problem during the dry winter months. All sorts of reptiles are affected. The unshed skin on the lamella will cause the climbing difficulties you describe.
The trick to removing the old shed is to rehydrate it through soaking. Put your crested in a small plastic container with holes in the lid and a half inch or so of tepid water for about 20 minutes. That should soften the old skin enough for you to roll it off the toes. You may need to grab the edge with tweezers but be very gentle, the structures on the toes are delicate. If you encounter alot of resistance then re-soak him  a while longer. A few drops of glycerin ( available at drug stores) added to the water can help.
