Horned Mountain Dragon

Question
Hi there. I have an Acanthosaura Crucigera (horned moutain dragon). I purchased him
from a pet store almost one year ago. I got him when he was a juvenile and I
took him to the vet and all was well. We have him trained to eat crickets when
he is brought to the front of his enclosure, but for the last month or so, he
has refused any food and has become quite uninterested in any kind of food item.
I have tried giving him crickets, super worms, earthworms, and red worms. He
doesn't even look at them. Do you have any idea as to what might be going on
with him and how we can get him to eat?

He is drinking and will move around when we relocate him in his enclosure (he
has a tendency to just stay in one spot for days). We keep his temperature
between 70-80 and his humidity is about 50-60. No factors to his environment
have been changed.

I also have an addition question in addition to him being fed. We were told by
the vet and through research that he would shed. I have never witnessed him
shedding or have seen any evidence of this. He also has very tiny horns, and
spine. All of the pictures and documentation I see show large horns and spines.
Is this normal?

Thank you for your time and any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello Jayme,

Well, the humidity should come up to around 78-80% on a regular basis.  You can use a fogger, that works pretty well.  I do not have one, but have a friend who breeds them in Texas.
The temps should be in the mid 70's to low 80's.  What are you measuring the temps with?  Are you using any UVB lighting?  If not, that could be one of the problems.  He could be getting metabolic bone disease & that could also be why he is so small.  He cannot adequately process or absorb calcium with UVB exposure & cannot synthesize D3 without UVB either.
Do you use any calcium supplementation on a regular basis?
The best flourescent tube bulbs are either the Reptisun 10, or the Reptiglo 8.  Do not get the compacts or coils.  Stay away from ESU/R-Zilla light, or the Reptiglo 10.
If he is not eating now, you might need to begin assist feeding.  Let me know if you are using a UVB.  If you are not, that is most likely going to be alot of the problem.  Adjust the humidty & the temps a bit to see if that helps.
