My leapard gecko is mean!

My leopard gecko was previously owned. The previous owner hadn't held it for a year even though he had said it was very nice when they got it. then they didn't hold it anymore for no reason. Now "Fitz" (My gecko)is very mean and "mean" includes hissing, nipping, and some times whipping its tail at me. is there anything I can do to make him nicer?

 It will take time.  Try placing your hand in his cage without trying to pick him up.  Do that for about ten minutes a day at least.  Sometimes offer a treat, a different insect like a silkworm, butterworm, or some phoenix worms.  If he climbs aboard for the treat, let him have his treat and climb off.  As he gets used to the hand and that it has good things in it, you will eventually be able to pick him up.  When you can do that, only return him to his cage when he is calm.
