Bearded Dragon Mating Habits

Question
I have 2 bearded dragons and a few months after we adopted them, the male started eating her tail and now she only has half of her tail left. So we separated them for a year and we just tried to rejoin them and as soon as I put her in with him his beard got pitch black, he turned sideways and was bobbing his head. He got on top of her and was squeezing her sides and trying to bite her head. we quickly separated them and the male won't stop bobbing his head and frantically running around his aquarium. I noticed the female had scratches under her belly. There wasn't any blood drawn but her scales were coming off. Would they mate that fast after i put her in there? Is he trying to mate with her or is he trying to hurt her? And what do I do if they are trying to breed? Thank you for your time!

Answer
Hello Leigh,

You are going to have to separate your dragons immediately, there is no other option.
How old are they?
They may not be trying to mate, they may be both males & fighting.
If they are a male & a female, they might still be too young to breed.
That tail is going to have to be looked at as it is going to be getting infected.  She will probably have to have more of it amputated.
Are you keeping the tail clean?  Be sure to make sure it is cleaned daily with betadine NOT hydrogen peroxide & use antibiotic ointment on it daily.
