companion for rabbit

Question
I have a wild rabbit I have raised since he was 2 days old(my dog got into the nest).  He is much to tame to ever live on his own, so he is part of our family.  He is alittle over a year old, he has his own room with lots of castles, toys and anything else you can imagne.  My question-I am afraid he is lonely, and would like to get a companion for him. I know I have read to intreduce new rabbits outside his room, my problem is that as freindly as he is, climbing in my lap and all, he is not a cuddler nor does he want picked up, that scares him to death, so I don't feel I can move him to another room to intreduce another bunny.  Do you have any suggestions? Am I better to leave him by himself?

Answer
Dear Danette,

You are very kind to worry about his loneliness.  If he's a wild cottontail, there is the possibility that he will be very territorial about his room, and not welcome any intruders--especially if they're rabbits!  But you never really know until you try.

Cottontails *can* get along well with domestic rabbits and other lagomorphs (we had a Cottie who was in *love* with our wild, sanctuary jackrabbits!), but you have to be careful about introductions.  You might like to contact your local rabbit rescuer:

(Click on the side image that says "Chapters" to find the one closest to you.) and see if they can help you with a "blind date" for your pal.

I hope this helps.  Good luck!
