Question
My friend asked me if I could take care of his rabbit for him meanwhile he got his own apartment. When I first took the rabbit in, it was pretty big. I kept the rabbit in my house for the past two years. I really would not let the rabbit run around my house a lot for two reasons. One being my daughters were scared  of it and the other being I was hardly ever home due to my work schedule. So its time was mostly spent in its cage. I found out this saturday night that the rabbit had died. I want to know if it was too old or what could have been the cause. I noticed that she had ran out of food on Tuesday morning. So between Wednesday and Saturday I had only fed it lettuce. Could this have been a reason why the rabbit died?

Answer
Dear Martha,

I am sorry about your loss.

Without a post mortem exam, there is just no way to know why the rabbit died.  If he did not have food, he might have become weak, but it is more vital for him to have water.  If he went without water for even a couple of days, this could have had dire health consequences.

A two year old rabbit is not at all old.  But without more information about the bunny's behavior and any symptoms he showed before he died, no one can accurately tell you the cause of death.

I am sorry about the loss of your rabbit.
