Broken nail on my rabbit

My rabbit broke his nail into the quick and it started bleeding a little bit and then stopped.  I am worried about it getting infected.  Is there anything I should put on it or do to prevent infection?

Hi Sheila,

I wouldn't worry too much.  It is quite rare to get an infection from a broken nail....but that is not to say it will never happen.  It would probably be a good idea to apply a topical antibiotic just for some insurance here.  Most likely the best you would have on hand...or could get without a RX...is plain old basic Neosporin.  Do not use the Neosporin Plus as it contains an anagesic that sometimes doesn't agree with rabbits.  But we use the basic Neosporin here quite a bit.  I would keep a watch on the toe for the next couple of days but I would not stress over it at all.
