Mycitracin -vs-Neosporin for bunnies

Question
I was wondering if you knew if Maximum Strength Mycitracin plus pain reliever is okay to use on a bunnies skin.  I have a bun that has a bald area near her middle side and it seems to be red and sore.  I have heard that neosporin is okay to use but I wanted to know if Mycitracin max strength with pain reliever was okay since it has a slight numbing effect.

Let me know
Thanks

Answer
Dear Carla,

I would not recommend either of these topical treatments until you find out the cause of the problem, since the wrong treatment can actually make things worse.  (If, for example, the red lesion is due to a ringworm fungus, antibiotic cream or ointment will not only not help,  but could make the problem worse by inhibiting any competing bacteria keeping the fungus in check.  Antibiotics have no effect on fungi.)

Please see:

to learn about some of the most common causes of abnormal fur loss in rabbits, and their appropriate veterinary treatment.  Please use this list:

to find a good vet near you and get bunny to the vet for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Hope this helps!
