QuestionCan you tell me if it is possible for a rabbit to get hayfever?
I have emailed you before about my rabbit having runny eyes, but it really does seem to be worse when the pollen count is high. Is there such a thing as anti-histamines for rabbits?
Thank you in adance for your time.
Hilary.
AnswerDear Hilary,
It's not impossible for any animal to be allergic to various allergens, but runny eyes in rabbits is almost never caused by pollen or allergies. Please read this:
www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sneezing.html
for a full explanation of what usually is at the root of chronic runny eyes. Pollen or irritants can make the situation worse, but it's time for your bunny to have a good dental exam from a good, experienced rabbit vet, whom you can find here:
www.rabbit.org/vets
Certain antihistamines can be used on rabbits, but I would not use them without the supervision of an experienced rabbit vet who can first do a molar check and even head radiographs to see if molar roots are causing this problem.
I hope this helps. Please write back if you have any other questions.
