skin problem?

My pet rabbit (maybe about 4 yrs old), male, has what looks like "scales" in his ears and at least once a year, has hair loss and the "scales" on his back-end. What is this and how do I treat it? It looks gross.  Thanks for your help.

Though I can't see it to be sure, it sounds like a case of mites.  These are, fortunately, easy to treat.  Please see:
