Wet fur from urine

Question
Hello,
I'm really sorry to bother you, i bought my mini lop - sooty fawn - Alfie from Michele at Oynx Stud ( i think) about 2 1/2 years ago..... for the last year and a half i've had a big problem, that is costing me a fortune and causing Alfie a lot of pain.  No vet seems to know what it is or to be able to find a cure and I was wondering if you have had a simular problem with a rabbit and may know the answer?

I've kept rabbits my whole life so i'm sure its not me!
Alfie is a house rabbit, he has a litter tray of either wood cat litter or sawdust (tried both to solve this problem) he eats carrots and cabbage, beans and other things (never lettuce or cucumber etc obviously) occassionaly as he never seems to drink much from bowl or bottle.
He lives in a cage indoors and is cleaned out every day.

I have taken Alfie to the vet so many times now and no one seems to be able to help.
His whole underside is constanley soaked in his own urine.  This is causing him so so much pain and even causing his skin to tear.  It looks like its burning him.

Everytime we take him to the vet, they shave his fur and give me a cream for his sores and also an oral liquid for him to take.  This makes him better until his fur grows again.

Do you know what this could possibly as its making him miserable and making his life boring as he can never come out of his cage to run around or for cuddles as his skin is to dirty and smelly and he can't go in the garden in case of fly strike?

Do you know what this could possibly be?  If you need to contact me by phone my number is 07947 821 179
Please let me know as soon as you can.

Thank you very much

Clare

Answer
What is the oral liquid they are giving?  If it is an antiobitic, it sounds as if Alfie has a urinary tract infection.  Hopefully they have cultured his urine to see what sort of infection he has.

He could also have kidney problems, and those would be diagnosed via blood tests.

There is a lot of information about this subject at http://homepage.mac.com/mattocks/morfz/rabrefs.html#scald

Right now the best thig to do is to keep the area as clean as possible and continue to put whatever the cream is for it on him.  I wouldn't even bother letting the fur grow back in, that just makes the problem worse.

I hope this helps you out.
