Question
QUESTION: Hello, My Rabbit was pouncing on his cadge, then biting the metal bars on it, he was also tilting and scratching his head. I looked online found out he could have a ear infection. I took him to the vet the next day and they had a look at him. Turns out he did have an ear infection. The vet gave me some ear drops for him. I tried putting the ear drops in his head. A couple hours later he was pouncing on his cadge and truing to chew the metal bars of it. I do not know what type of ear infection he has sonic you can help I would appreciate it. THANKS!!

ANSWER: Dear Jhon,

Pouncing on his cage and biting the bars are not signs of ear infection.  They are signs of boredom and wanting to get out to play!  A rabbit needs at least 6-8 hours of free running time per day, and must not be enclosed in a cage all the time.  The more play time you can provide, the better, but you will need to be sure to bunny-proof the house first:

Be sure the vet you saw is familiar with rabbits.  If this is truly an ear infection, then drops may not be enough to solve the problem, which can be much more dangerous in rabbits than in cats or dogs.  Please find an experienced rabbit vet here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

who can really find out what is going on.  Neutering will also help calm him down, help with litterbox training, and make life better for everyone in the long run.  Please read:

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Thank You sorry about my spelling I have a old computer.
Is there anything else I should know about having my rabbit neutered?

Answer
Dear Jhon,

Pretty much everything you need to know about having your bunny spayed/neutered can be found here:

www.rabbit.org/health/spay.html

but you can also get information about pre- and post-operative care here:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/opcare.html

Be sure he's in very good physical condition before any surgery, so he'll have the best chance of quick recovery.

Good luck!
