My bunny seemed to be bleading

Question
Hi, I'm a new rabbit owner, and I am trying to take care of my adopted bunny Dash as best I can. I recently let him out into my bedroom (completely rabbit proof, no reachable wires, or anything for him to get into.) I was doing laundry and other chores. He was left out for about 2 hours with complete access to his cage where his food, water house, and litter box is, he can jump into his home, as its on the floor for now. I came back to find him sleeping in his cage, but later that night around midnight, I found was looks like to be blood, sprayed all over my closet! I am so frightened, I have checked Dash all over, and he doesn't seem to have any soars, open wounds, or dirty fur, (hes half white, half black.) Can you help me? I look forward to hearing from you, Signed frantic bunny adopter.

(other information you may need to know, hes roughly 2 years old (he was adopted) I adopted him about 3 months ago, hes not neutered, (i'm saving up the money) as for what kind f bunny hes part dwarf, thats all I know.)

Answer
Dear Cody,

When you see a spray of blood on the walls, that's usually a sign that someone has broken a toenail (ow!) and then flicked his foot because of the pain and gotten blood all over everything.  I'll bet if you check all his paws, you'll find that one of the nails is very short and ragged.

If you do find that, give it a little rinse with dilute povidone iodine solution to disinfect, and just keep an eye on it.  It should heal without incident, but if you see any sign of swelling or unusual tenderness, then your rabbit-savvy vet should have a look:

Be sure his nails are a safe length so they can't catch on carpet or other things and break off.  If you're not sure how to trim his nails, you can ask the vet to show you.

If you don't find a broken nail, then let me know and we'll try to figure out what else might have happened.  But in my experience, a blood-spattered wall means broken toenail.

Hope this helps!
