QuestionI have 2 female unneutered rabbits that are both around 3-4 months old, that live together in a cage. I have been trying to litter train them, but placing a triangular litter box in a corner that they have soiled in. I am using rabbit/ferret litter in the box. I have even put some hay in the litter box so they will go into the box, but they won't go to the bathroom in the litter box. I have even put their droppings and urine in the box. They are going everywhere in the cage. Additionally, I have placed some toys in the corners that they sometimes go in so they will go into the box. They are going into the box to eat the hay and to relax and lie down in, but they keep going everywhere else in the cage.
Also, because they are going everywhere in the cage I have been changing huge amounts of chips everyday so that the cage will remain smell-free and i feel as though I'm wasting more chips then i should. I've been going through one entire bag of chips a week.
AnswerYou're doing the right things in trying some hay in the box, moving it to a spot they use, putting their droppings/urine in a box.
Have you tried a different size/type of box? I've never had a rabbit yet who would use those triangle things. I always use cat litter boxes or plastic storage containers. Rabbits seem to like the size/shape of these things better.
The other thing to consider is that they're not fixed. They're at the early range for puberty. And it could be that the urinating and pellet dropping is also related to the rabbits beginning to define territory.
I would try changing the litter box first, and seeing how they respond.
