Question
I have two female Californian rabbits. And aren't they gorgeous!  Their dark ears, paws, and tail change color frequently and now are starting to gray.  I just got them this past easter as babies and I'm just wanting to know their life expectancy.  I am in love with them and just want to protect myself.  Since rabbits have such a large litter and so frequently I thought it may be because they don't live very long.  Maybe their color is supposed to change or maybe it's due to stress or something?  Sorry--i'm a nurse and I think too much into everything.  Thanks for your time.

Answer
Yes, Californian's markings seem to change based on how hot or cold it is, as far as we have been able to determine.  They tend to get darker in the summer.

If you have them spayed so they don't have babies, and keep them indoors, they can live 7-10 years.  Living outdoors their life expectancy tends to be shorter.
