Rabbit small eye ulcer

Question
Hi, I have a rabbit and about a week ago I took him to the vet because he had one eye closed most of the time. This happened all of a sudden so I assume he hurted his eye somehow. I took him to the vet and she examined him and said he had a very small ulcer and that it wasn't deep but she will still give him something to help it heal. She gave him Vetropolycin and told me to apply it twice a day for a week. Everything had been going fine, but today after I came back from dinner I noticed his eye is maily closed again. This is the 4th day I've been putting the treatment so he has 3 more days to go. However, I don't know why his eye is closed again. Could he had hurt it again or is this part of the healing? Please help me with any advice you can. I will really appreciate it.

Answer
Dear Daly,

If the eye was getting better, but now he's squinting again, then there's a good possibility he injured it again, or that the antibiotics have allowed a fungus to proliferate (by removing the bacteria that compete with the fungus).

I would take him back to the vet for a quick check, so the vet can decide if any new medications might be necessary, or whether to just extend the treatment with the medication you already have.

If the lesion is healing but he's still squinting, there could be something completely *new* wrong with his eye (e.g., glaucoma) that will need to be checked and treated, as necessary.

I hope this helps.
