broken toenails

Question
I bought a few rabbits from a place were they did not have the best care.  When I got them home, I trimmed their toenails because they were quite long.  A few days later, two of the bunnies had broken toenails to the skin.  I think maybe the nails were already cracked when I trimmed them.  Will these nails grow back? Both rabbits are doing fine. Jennifer

Answer
Dear Jennifer,

You're probably right that the nails were already damaged.  Just keep a close eye on the nail bed for any sign of swelling or redness, which could indicate infection.  If you don't see that, then the nails should grow out normally in a week or so.

With good nutrition, you'll see the nails return to normal pretty quickly.  Thank you for rescuing the bunnies!
