wild rabbit behavior

Question
I observed two rabbits (one and two) doing the following: one stood in one place while two raced toward him at full speed.  Just before collision, one jumped straight up and two raced under him, stopped, turned, and raced at one again.  One jumped and two raced under him.  They continued this for as long as I had patience to watch.  Why?

Answer
Hi Jeremy

All rabbits are playful in nature.  If they were a group of bonded rabbits they were most likely playing.  If you were to put a group of bonded domestic rabbits together they would find similar ways to entertain themselves.  Their behavior is hard to explain but it doesn't sound as though they were fighting for territory.  If it was a territorial fight it would have been more of them running towards each other and fur would have been flying as they would have been fighting with each other.

I am sure they were just playing and entertaining themselves.  Since wild rabbits don't have toys to entertain themselves with they come up with some pretty unusual games.  It is very nice that you got to observe this part of nature.  Rabbits are amazing and creative creatures.

Sincerely

Pam
