Eating after spaying

Question
Our female rabbit was spayed yesterday (came round about 1pm-now 2pm following day).  She is eating a little-hence why I am not at the vets with her now, she has ate a little lettuce last night and this morning (2-3 small leaves) and half a rabbit treat.  She is drinking fine.  Hasn't ate any of her pellets or hay though, is this normal?

Answer
Hi Vicky,

females recover a little slower than males.  The first couple of days they pretty much won't want to do much.  The important thing is to make sure their pain is controlled so that they will continue to eat.  She may be in pain if she doesn't have pain meds.  It is a good sign she is eating a little bit, but you'll want to see her get back to normal eating very soon.

Did your vet give you pain meds for her? If not I would call and request some, this is standard procedure for post-op rabbits.  Unless there's a specific medical condition with your rabbit, I'd demand them.

If you can't get them from your vet, go to

www.rabbit.org\vets

and find a House Rabbit Society-recommended rabbit vet in your area, explain she's been through a spay and that you need pain medicine for her so that she keeps eating.
