Question
hi, i was wondering if you can help me. I have a energetic 8 year old house bunny who has just go over an abscess. He is fine most of the time but i have just noticed that at times he is a bit unsteady on his back legs, and he tail was a bit messy. Was wondering what has caused this?

Answer
Hi Anthea,

my initial response is this:

1.  Make sure hay is making up most of his diet.  Cut out all sugar and high carb (bread, oats, etc) treats, all fruits, etc.  If you can get some acidophilus tablets to give him probiotics to help build up his good stomach bacteria that would help.

2. Make sure you give him all the antibiotics the vet gave you - don't stop before they are gone.  He needs to be on them until they are gone.

3. I'd take him back to the vet and ask about the unsteadiness - if it is a symptom of one of the drugs he's been given, if it may be affecting his balance, or if the abscess was in an area of his head that affects his balance, meaning it might still be there or it caused some damage that needs some time to heal.  If this is a possibility then he really does need to go back to teh vet so you can have the vet explain it to you.
