Stuck in Molt

Question
Hi! Samantha,
I raise Californians and have a few Bucks that seem to stay in a molt 95% of the time. I am feeding a 16.5% protein feed. Can this maybe be to high of a protein for some rabbits? Or do you know of anything else that could cause them to be stuck in a molt?
Thanks!

Answer
I have had the same problem this year with some rabbits never going out of moult. Moulting could be caused by a few things.
1. Getting in winter fur/summer fur
2. Getting wet- the sligtest bit of water on a coat can put a rabbit in severe moult.
3. Dampness in the air followed by a chill.
Make sure your rabbits are protected good from the elements of the outdoors.
Your feed protein percent is not too high. I feed regularly a 18% feed. It may be that it is too low?? Try getting a higher feed protein. Also I use a conditioning mix for mine that helps to keep their coats in prime condition. This is the recepie.
1 1/2 cup oats- not the instant but the long cook.
2 cups black oil sunflower seeds
1/2 cup cherrios- unsweetened
Add enough Wheat Germ oil to this mix to get ingredients to stick together. This alway helps with my coats. Just feed 1-2 teaspoons per rabbit per day.
I also give mine raw sweetpotatoes and that seems to help too.
