Question
hello,
i am wondering if you can help me i have a lion head lop female rabbit who is nearly 3 years old. yesterday i noticed that she has blood in her urine (i think) and i have become very worried. She lives with a male guinea pig and she has started to try and breed with him and often makes herself nests could this have something to do with it.
i will be very pleased of any help that you can give me, many thanks

Answer
Hannah, 90% of the time it is not blood you see in the urine but a pigment from a weed that is harvested along with alfalfa when pellets are made.  The color can be anywhere between bright orange and bright red.  It can be seen in just a few rabbits in a herd even tho the whole herd eats the same pellets.  If she is eating well, drinking well and seems in fine spirts I would not worry.  Rabbits have a very strong need to breed - she is also experiencing false pregnancies - thus making nests - her hormones make her feel like she is PG and sometimes she can even produce milk.  This can make a rabbit very unhappy and frustrated and she could become aggressive with the poor guinea pig.  I suggest that you either get her neutered or find her a mate.

Another suggestion is that you put  6ml of apple cider vinegar per liter in the water ( everyday ) for both pets - this helps their urinary system all their lives.
