rabbit teeth care

Question
My rabbit has Malocclusion and needs to have his teeth removed or cut every 4 to 6 weeks.  But I saw that the veteran uses a machine to grind my rabbit's teeth after cutting it to smooth out the edges.  The veteran mentioned that it was like filing human nails and it did not hurt my rabbit.  So I was wondering if it would be possible and safe to purchase the machine that is used to grind the teeth smooth to use at home so his teeth can be grinded down before it gets too long.  Would it be safe to grind his teeth at home to keep the length short to avoid having to get them cut?  Thank you.

Answer
Dear Kristiana,

Your vet is probably using a Dremel tool with special attachments, and these are fairly expensive.  You *can* learn to file your rabbit's teeth at home, but it is not an easy job, and can be risky if the bunny is jumpy.

Your vet probably puts the rabbit under anesthesia for this filing, and if you can't do that, it would not be wise for you to attempt this at home.  You could accidentally cause a serious injury.

But talk to your vet about this, and if s/he is willing to teach you how to do it, then go from there.

Hope this helps.
