fur loss, scabs and sores

Question
My rabbit is a house pet and recently has developed a large bald area on her back within that bald area are some scabs and some newer sores, i have taken her to the vet who said it could have been a reaction to her recent myxo jab, he then gave her another jab of antibiotics, however it started to improve but i have now noticed some newer sores, could this be due to over grooming as she is a lone pet and is maybe showing signs of boredom?

Answer
Hi Faye,

anything is possible.  I would think it may not be self-immolation due to where the sores are (on her back).  Normally I hear of rabbits doing this around their dewlap area and neck area, rather than their back.  It's just a little more inconvenient to pull out back fur.

Has your routine changed around the house?  Are people around her less, did you move her to a different spot in the house, change furniture around, someone new or gone in the house, different new pets, etc, etc, and if so, were the changes before the bald spot?

Whatever the cause, it is clear she needs to continue on antibiotics as they were improving her condition and it appears to be some kind of bacterial infection that the antibiotic was working against.  You should ask the vet for an oral version that you can administer via an oral (mouth) syringe.  If it's too hard to do to her mouth, take a dose from the syringe and coat her food pellets with it, let it soak in a minute and then give it to her that way.

Was she ever outside by the way?
