broken rabbit nose?

Question
Today some dogs were in a room with our rabbit (he was in his cage) and he freaked out. He jumped around a whole bunch and ripped off a toe nail. Its bleeding pretty badly and also his nose is swollen and bleeding. we put some baking soda on his foot with some gauze pad to keep it on. What should we do to make his pain go away and to help the bleeding stop faster?

Answer
Dear Emily,

You should get the bunny to an experienced rabbit vet right away who can examine the nose and teeth to be sure there is no serious damage.  If there are broken bones, this could be very serious.  Rabbits' teeth grow continually, and if a jaw bone heals in a wrong position, your bunny could have a permanent malocclusion that would require that his teeth be filed or cut every couple of weeks.  You certainly want to prevent that, if at all possible.

Find a good vet here:

In the meantime, a cool compress on his nose might help.  But the vet will have rabbit-safe pain medication that will help with the pain and inflammation.

I hope this helps.  And I guess you know now not to ever let dogs near your bunny if he feels trapped and can't get away.  :(
