Question
Hello,

my name is karina and i have a netherlan dwarf rabbit. um... i moved into a room i rent for school and in this house there are cats. well there is one particular cat who likes to play with my bunny and at first the bunny wouldn't do anything but now he plays with the cat, or at least i think he is playing with the cat. i've also seen him hump the cat several times. since then he has been nibbling his cage at any time and sometimes waking me up while i am sleeping. i have come to notice that he nibbles the cage until i let him out. today i let him out to just jump around n if he wanted to play with the cat. today he went all psycho on me, he was running around the room so fast and out of no where when i went to grab a pen off the floor he went to grab my arm. he bit me and out of instinct i pulled away and up but the rabbit was hanging off my long sleeve shirt then he let go. so my feet were on the ground n all of a sudden after that he went for my foot.i felt it but my jeans were sort of in the way so i didnt get a swollen mark. now i have my feet on my chair away from him and waiting for him to go in his cage by himself. i dont even want to touch him for bitting me. afraid hes gonna bit me again, the bit on my arm is already swollen. why is he all of a sudden gone crazy? is it cause he doesnt want the cat in my room? plz try to help me
thank you for your time

sincerely

karina

Answer
Sounds like your boy is in serious need of a neuter.

The humping of the cat and the super circling and aggressiveness indicates that it is time for his neuter.  I don't know what triggered the behavior you see today.  In my experience, once the males hit puberty, they like a car engine that just gets revved more and more and then they are about unbearable to live with until their surgery.

It's hard to tell if what your rabbit is doing is aggressive in nature or just a very strong sexual desire.  Some males will do a strong nip and latch onto those they hope to get some sexual satisfaction of.  I've had to stand on one leg in washing dishes before because an un-neutered male kept nipping one of my legs so he could hump it.  This rabbit also hopped onto my shoulder and humped it when I sat down on the floor.  This could be what is happening here.

Or it could be hormone induced aggressiveness.  Some rabbits get much more territorial when they hit puberty.

Also, if he hasn't already, he will start spraying.  And that is indeed foul and nasty.

Right now, until he gets neutered, it could be tough to navigate the area he is in and interact with him.  You may have to keep a broom handy to nudge him in his cage and protect your legs.

After you get him neutered, it will take about a month to get all the testosterone out of his system.  He will be a much calmer bunny.
